Monthly
Historical
Values- This report replaces our old Performance
History report. The Historical Values report not only shows how your
portfolio has changed in value over time, but also shows how contributions
and withdrawals have affected your overall values. All dollar
amounts are listed in thousands (000s) of dollars. By default, this
report will show the last twelve months of data, but you can select your
own date range using the drop down boxes provided. The report shows
the following sections:
Date- The
report shows end of month data going as far back as December of 1997.
Portfolio Value-
The consolidated portfolio value (in thousands of dollars).
Net Starting
Value- Depending on the date range that you select, this column shows
the beginning value and then adjusts it for contributions and
withdrawals. The values are not adjusted for changes in prices,
so this will give you an idea of how much you have invested over the
time period you choose compared to what your portfolio is worth.
Total
Contributions- This column shows how much you have contributed to your
accounts, less any withdrawals, going as far back as December of
1997. If you were a client before 1998, this value uses December
1997 values as a starting point. This lets you know how much
your accounts are worth in relation to how much you have contributed
since inception.
Performance Evaluation- This
report is full of information. It is essentially broken up into five major
sections: Deposits/Withdrawals, Gains/Losses, Values, Performance, and Allocations.
Each section is analyzed on a month by month basis from the beginning of the year.
Some of the performance data is cumulative from the beginning of the year and some
is not. Here is a description of what each of the sections offer:
Deposits/Withdrawals- This shows the
net deposits or withdrawals by account that occurred in a particular month. This
section is a periodic analysis, so the figures are NOT cumulative.
Period Gains/Losses- This shows the
amount of interest or dividends and market gain or loss that was realized during a
particular month for the entire portfolio. This section is also a periodic
analysis, so the figures are NOT cumulative.
Values- This shows a snapshot
of what each of the accounts are worth on the end of month dates. These values do
include accrued interest (if applicable).
Performance- This section shows
portfolio returns for the period, for the year, and since inception (or
12/31/97 whichever is more recent). Internal Rates of Return (IRR)
percentages are calculated using the Discounted Cash Flow method. Index figures are
also shown to give you an idea of how the markets have performed.
Period Return- This looks at
the performance from one period (month) to the next. Since this is a periodic
analysis, the figures are NOT cumulative.
Reporting Period Gain/Loss-
This is a cumulative look at how much money the entire portfolio has gained or lost since
the beginning of the year.
Reporting Period Return- This
is a year to date look at how your entire portfolio has performed since the beginning of
the year.
Annualized Inception Return-
This is a look at how your entire portfolio has performed since the designated start
date. The returns on this row are annualized, so as to give you an idea of how the
portfolio is performing on a twelve month basis.
Index Reporting Period Return-
This shows how each of the indices have performed from the beginning of the year.
Since this is a year to date analysis, all returns are cumulative.
Allocations- This section shows
a snapshot of how your entire portfolio was allocated (cash, equity, income, etc.) on the
end of month dates.

Performance
Comparison- This
report is helps give a better indication of how your account is doing
relative to the market indices. It shows the essential YTD
information like Deposits/Withdrawals, Gains/Losses, Values, Performance, and Allocations.
However, the most valuable information on this report shows how the
performance of your portfolio compares to the market. There are
three kinds of comparisons that you can examine
Pure index
returns- Each major asset class displays the performance of an
index. You can compare your asset class performance against this
index.
Index Returns for
Actual Allocations- We take the individual index returns and calculate
a weighted average based on your current allocations to show a
comparison index return for your portfolio. In other words, it
shows how you might have expected your account to perform (as
currently allocated) if you had invested in the respective index as
opposed to your real holdings.
Index Returns for
Target Allocations- Each client has their own unique risk
tolerance and a maximum stock exposure. Therefore, we create
target allocations for our clients that show how the client should be
allocated under normal circumstances. We use these target
allocations and calculate how they would have performed if invested in
the corresponding index. This can help show you whether being
under of over-exposed to stocks has been of benefit or not to your
portfolio.
All calculations can be
affected by big swings or reallocation moves over the course of the
year. So please study these performance comparison calculations
carefully.
