Put Options

A contract that grants the right to sell at a specified price a specified number of shares by a certain date.

For example, buying one ABC December 70 Put entitles you to sell one lot (100 shares) of ABC at 70 from now until it expires in December regardless of what ABC is actually trading at. Therefore, when ABC is trading below 70, the put option has intrinsic, real value. When ABC is trading above or at 70, the option has no real value, but may have trading value based solely on speculation.
